In 1993 the Department moved into the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with the addition of AED\'s on all three Engine\'s. As one of the first fire departments in the state to provide this advanced service chances of survival for patients in cardiac arrest where drastically increased. In the first year alone 37 % of arrest patients survived the highest save rate in the State of New Jersey
The island with 25000 year round residents and a population of over 150000 summer residents results in over 5000 incidents a year for the Fire Department. From Fire Suppression to EMS water or vehicle rescue the highly trained Firefighter/EMT\'s of the OCFD stand ready 24/7.
